How to manage and customize Windows Terminal

Featured

For both Windows 10 and 11, the Windows Terminal app offers powerful and interesting ways to run and interact with a variety of command line environments. Via a single interface, this tool offers access to multiple versions of PowerShell, the Command Prompt, Azure Cloud Shell, and a wide variety of Linux shells via the Windows Subsystem for Linux (bash, Z-shell, Korn Shell, and so forth).

Working with Windows Terminal can involve nothing more than launching the command line environment of your choosing. But that’s just the beginning of what this extraordinary environment can do. Warning! Once you understand some of what Windows Terminal enables, it can easily become a massive time-suck. That’s because there’s no limit to the tweaks and customizations it supports.

The productivity advantages of Microsoft Azure: vertical focus

Disclosure: Microsoft is a client of the author.

This week Microsoft offered up a presentation on its “Microsoft Cloud For Sustainability” effort, which should benefit companies trying to wrap their arms around efforts to reverse climate change and pollution. Companies are looking to do more in this area because customers increasingly favor vendors with a strong focus on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) values. The environmental part is currently getting the most focus because it is in the public’s eye with concerns around climate change driving vendor and solution choices.

Big clouds aren’t always the right fit for small businesses

Usually, when it comes to a business cloud decision, you’re going to go with one of the big players: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Services, IBM Cloud, or Microsoft Azure. You know their names.

But the bigger clouds aren’t always suitable for everyone or every job.

For example, with hyperscale clouds, it’s effortless to get locked into a particular cloud.

Apple explains Google Workspace integration for Apple IDsJonny Evans

Apple’s plans to integrate Google Workspace identity services with Managed Apple IDs should simplify cloud identity management for businesses that use services from the search advertising giant.

Bringing the work and school teams together

The recently-announced integration is particularly focused on the needs of small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs) using Apple Business Essentials (ABE) and educators using Apple School Manager, but, like the Microsoft Azure Active Directory integration that Managed Apple IDs already enjoy, will likely reach additional services.

Windows 11 — we haven’t seen anything, yet

Disclosure: Microsoft is a client of the author.

Microsoft this week had an analyst event about Windows 11 and a variety of productivity, management, and security features the company has planned. Over the last couple of years, Microsoft has aggressively improved both Windows and Office 365, but the big change ahead is the potential blend of Windows with Windows 365. We’ll see that start by the end of the year. The end game should be what appears to be a Windows desktop that integrates so well with the cloud that it can, when necessary, seamlessly switch between instances to comply with company policy, assure security, and provide recourse on automatic demand from Azure Cloud.

Windows 11: The end of the old-school Windows desktop

I’ve called Windows 11 a pointless upgrade. My reasoning was that it came with compatibility problems and really added nothing to Windows 10. Sure, it includes better security. But, spoiler alert, most of those improvements were already in the Windows 10 20H2 release (the October 2020 Update). You just have to turn them on.

So, what is Windows 11’s point? I think it’s to slowly get you used to the idea of Windows as a Service (WaaS).

Microsoft has been moving users to this Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) model for years now. Today, you can already subscribe to the easy-to-use Windows 365 Cloud PC. Or, if you want more control and features, there’s Windows 365 Enterprise or Azure Virtual Desktop. But these are all more business than consumer plays. And, while Microsoft loves its business customers, it still likes its home sales, too. (Of course, the difference between home and work is blurring more then ever thanks to the growing work-from-home movement.)
