Microsoft says cloud demand waning, plans to infuse AI into products

Microsoft on Tuesday said it expects the growth across its cloud business to temper down through 2023 as enterprises brace for economic headwinds.

The Windows-maker reported 29% growth in total cloud revenue to $21.5 billion for the second quarter of fiscal year 2023, slowing from Q1, 2023 where the company posted 31% growth for the segment. These numbers exclude the impact of currency fluctuations. Microsoft said it expects its third quarter cloud gross margin to decrease by one percentage point, driven by Azure.

Microsoft Azure and other cloud services grew 38% in constant currency terms on a year-on-year basis, slowing down by 4% from the previous sequential quarter.

Microsoft customers locked out of Azure and M365 services due to geolocation error

Some Microsoft customers were unable to access the company’s Azure and Microsoft 365 services on Thursday due to an issue with Microsoft’s geolocation services.

Just after 12 p.m. GMT, the Microsoft 365 Status Twitter account posted a tweet alerting customers to the fact that it was “investigating an issue where users with specific conditional access policies applied may be unable to access any Microsoft 365 service,” adding that Microsoft was attempting to reverse a recent change in order to mitigate the impact.

7 highly useful PowerShell tools

Featured

Ah, PowerShell. A simple blue window and some text has transformed the world of Windows administration from a point-and-click GUI to scripts that automate everything, as well as provide log rotation and identity lifecycle management and govern which server receives which updates.

Everything in the newest versions of Windows Server as well as Microsoft 365, Azure, Intune, Viva, and all of the other cloud jazz is accessible primarily via PowerShell and only secondarily (and sometimes even not at all) via the server’s GUI or a web interface. That means PowerShell knowledge has become a must. Sometimes, though, it is difficult to know whether you are proceeding correctly. Luckily, there are resources available that will help speed you along in your training and professional responsibilities.

Patch Tuesday: Two zero-day flaws in Windows need immediate attention

Microsoft’s December Patch Tuesday updated delivers 59 fixes, including two zero-days (CVE-2022-44698 and CVE-2022-44710) that require immediate attention on the Windows platform. This is a network focused update (TCP/IP and RDP) that will require significant testing with an emphasis on ODBC connections, Hyper-V systems, Kerberos authentication, and printing (both local and remote).

Microsoft also published an urgent out-of-band update (CVE-2022-37966) to address serious Kerberos authentication issues. (The team at Readiness has provided a helpful infographic that outlines the risks associated with each of these updates.)

How to manage and customize Windows Terminal

Featured

For both Windows 10 and 11, the Windows Terminal app offers powerful and interesting ways to run and interact with a variety of command line environments. Via a single interface, this tool offers access to multiple versions of PowerShell, the Command Prompt, Azure Cloud Shell, and a wide variety of Linux shells via the Windows Subsystem for Linux (bash, Z-shell, Korn Shell, and so forth).

Working with Windows Terminal can involve nothing more than launching the command line environment of your choosing. But that’s just the beginning of what this extraordinary environment can do. Warning! Once you understand some of what Windows Terminal enables, it can easily become a massive time-suck. That’s because there’s no limit to the tweaks and customizations it supports.
